Issue:
There is a known issue with GIMP version 2.8.xx. This latest version creates icon file sizes that are larger than specified on "Home Screen SDK Icon Design Guide" documentation (sdkj_icondesign_guide_e105).
In this guide, the file size in bytes is shown as below. The new version of GIMP makes the file size larger by a few bytes. This difference in the file size causes the icons not to display properly on SDK/J platforms.
Display | Icon Type | File size in bytes |
---|---|---|
WVGA | Standard screen (Selected) | 35,894 |
Standard screen (Deselected) | 35,894 | |
Simple screen (Selected) | 41,014 | |
Simple screen (Deselected) | 41,014 | |
uWVGA | Standard screen (Selected) | 29,750 |
Standard screen (Deselected) | 29,750 | |
Simple screen (Selected) | 41,014 | |
Simple screen (Deselected) | 41,014 |
There a couple of work arounds to solve issue:
- Use an older version on GIMP (Version 2.6) https://download.gimp.org/mirror/pub/gimp/v2.6/
- Resave file using a different imaging software application
- Use Microsoft Paint. (See steps below)
Below are the steps when you use MS Paint:
Open file using MS paint, this will be the same file you saved (exported) using new version on GIMP 2.8.xx.
Save file in MS Paint WITHOUT making any changes, it is just open and save operation.
Open file properties to verify file size, the newly saved file from MS Paint will have same dimensions as noted on icon design guide.
